Most backyards in this area start out as underused space - patchy grass, no real flow, nothing that makes you want to spend time outside. That's exactly the kind of situation we love working through. This Dellwood property needed a complete overhaul, and the goal was to create something functional, clean, and built to last.
Here's what we were working with - a wraparound backyard space that needed to connect the home's rear entrance to the surrounding yard in a way that made sense visually and practically. We laid a large-format paver patio using a mix of charcoal and warm-toned natural stone pavers. The contrast between the two tones gives the surface real depth without being too busy.
The steps leading down from the rear entrance were built with matching materials, so everything ties together as one cohesive system. That continuity matters. When the hardscape materials speak the same language throughout a space, the whole yard feels intentional rather than pieced together over time.
On both sides of the patio, we built out natural stone river rock beds with young trees and low plantings worked in. This keeps maintenance low while adding texture and visual interest around the perimeter. It also creates a clear separation between the patio surface and the surrounding landscape - no muddy edges, no grass creeping in.
Work like this holds up well in Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycles when it's installed right. Proper base prep, good drainage, and quality materials are what separate a patio that shifts and settles from one that stays solid for years. That's the standard we hold ourselves to on every job.
